These are some of my favorite quotes. The first section
contains quotes that I think are meaningful or profound and a short description
of what they mean to me. The second section contains quotes that can only
be described as Oooops! Most of them are just ridiculous, some of them
sort of ironic. Anyway, here they are.
Amazing how so much can be said in so few words
"The universe is teeming with
life, or we are all alone. Either possibility is staggering"
Dr. Carl Sagan
The late Carl Sagan was staunch believer in extra-terrestial life. This quote really captures both his and my fascination with the subject.
"In any man who dies, there dies
with him, his first snow and kiss and fight, Not people die, but worlds
die in them."
Yevgeny Yevtushenko
I love this particular quote. Each person has their own life, their own "World". There is not one world in which we live, but 6 1/2 billion, and counting...
" If I have seen farther than
other men, it is only because I have stood upon the shoulders of giants"
Sir Isaac Newton
This quote is thought to be a somewhat belated homage to Johannes Kepler, whose brilliant observational work, Newtons' laws of gravitation is largely based
" There is nothing quite so terrible
as a battle lost, except perhaps, a battle won
Lord Wellington
Lord Wellington wrote this line while reflecting on his defeat of Napolean at Waterloo. I read this many years ago and while I understood the importance of what he said intellectually, I never truly understood it until I stood on the road to Basra the day after the cease fire of the Persian Gulf War, surrounded by 20,000 dead men. then I understood it in my heart.
